How Did I Get Here?

Updated: May 6, 2021

When traumatic circumstances and situations draw us into a place of pain, darkness and fear, we often ask ourselves; “How Did I Get Here?” We say to ourselves, “This is not the way my life was supposed to be”, “I can’t continue to live like this.” These types of statements prove that the path you are on is not the one that you want. It is not the true you.

I believe that deep inside everyone wants to live a life of fullness that includes purpose, prosperity, family and love. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes when we have experienced a lot of pain in our lives, it leaves a hole that causes us to seek a way of escape from the hurt we have encountered. How we escape determines the path for our future. Some have chosen education, exercise, sports, work, religion, etc., to fill the emptiness and pain that life’s trauma brought their way. They submerged themselves into things to give them strength to rise above the hurt and propel them into a better future. However, many times these choices are not readily available or easy to obtain.

The choice of immediate escape is often found in alcohol and drugs. This is oftentimes the go to option when situations trigger negative emotions that stemmed from the pains of our past. It’s availability and easy access serves as a temporary retrieve from our present realities, however, the path that the overuse of these substances takes us on can lead us into a dark and dismal place. Once we have come down from the temporary place of escape (high), we find ourselves asking the question once again, “How Did I Get Here?”.

I want to encourage you that there is hope. You can come out of this cycle. With help and healing you can overcome addiction.
